Sustainable heating and cooling with energy from the ground

ATES systems (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage) store thermal energy in groundwater for heating and cooling buildings. They have become the standard for larger new-build projects in the Netherlands and Flanders.

During seasonal transitions, groundwater is alternately pumped up and returned to the subsurface. This purging process demands reliable filtration to keep the system running efficiently and without interruptions.

Winter

Warm groundwater is pumped up to heat the building. The cooled return water is stored as a cold source for the summer.

Summer

Cold groundwater cools the building. The warmed return water is stored as a heat source for the following winter.

The role of filtration

During every seasonal switch, the well water is purged. The BÈTA ATES filter cleans this water so it can be fully reused — without losses and without contaminating the well systems.

What makes the BÈTA ATES filter different

Minimal pressure drop

The filters are specifically designed with a low pressure drop, so pumps can start at maximum flow immediately. You lose no capacity due to filter resistance.

High flow capacity

With a maximum throughput of 500 m³ per hour, the BÈTA ATES filter is suitable for the largest new-build projects and utility buildings.

500 m³/h

Zero purge water loss

The filter prevents discharge of water into the sewer. Purge water is fully reused, contributing to sustainable ATES operation with low filter consumption.

100% reuse

Compact design

The filters can be installed both horizontally and vertically. Ideal for the limited space in technical plant rooms and basement floors of utility buildings.

Suitable for salt and brackish water

The stainless steel 316 filters withstand salt and brackish groundwater. Reliable in coastal areas and locations with varying groundwater quality.

Proven and installed

BÈTA Industrie has successfully installed hundreds of ATES filters in groundwater and thermal storage systems. Not an experiment, but a market standard with over 30 years of experience.

In which sectors do we deploy ATES filters?

ATES systems are increasingly applied beyond the utilities market. BÈTA Industrie supplies filtration solutions for every sector where thermal storage and groundwater management come together.

Utilities & Real Estate

New construction and renovation

Office buildings, schools, hospitals and care institutions. ATES is the standard for buildings over 1,000 m² floor area with high demands on climate control.

Water Treatment

Groundwater and well systems

Water boards, drinking water companies and industrial users deploying groundwater for process cooling or heating. Protection of well filters is critical for uninterrupted operations.

Agriculture & Horticulture

Greenhouse climate control

Large-scale greenhouse growers use ATES for emission-free cultivation. Reliable filtration prevents clogging of drip lines and heat exchangers caused by groundwater contamination.

Chemical industry

Process cooling and heating

Chemical installations with strict requirements on pressure drop and material selection (ATEX, REACH). BÈTA filters in 316 SS withstand aggressive media and are delivered with all required documentation.

Filtering purge water at maximum flow

During a seasonal switch of an ATES system, the well water is purged. This water contains sand, clay particles and biological material that can damage well filters and heat exchangers.

The BÈTA ATES filter automatically cleans this purge water during pumping, without pressure build-up or system interruption. The cleaned water is fed back directly, making sewer discharge unnecessary.

  • Protects well filters against wear and clogging
  • Prevents contamination of heat exchangers and pipework
  • No chemicals or consumables required
  • Easy to maintain, even in small technical spaces
